Manchester United have blocked Jesse Lingard’s attempts to leave Old Trafford on loan five hours before the transfer window closes – despite interim boss Ralf Rangnick giving it his blessing.
United have been in talks with Newcastle over a deal until the end of the season, while West Ham were also bidding to take Lingard on loan again.
Newcastle made an offer of £3million up front with a further £4m if they avoid relegation, but it’s understood that United chairman Joel Glazer pulled the plug on a deal with the Premier League strugglers and their Saudi owners.
Manchester United have suddenly told Jesse Lingard he cannot leave on deadline day
Ralf Rangnick had given his blessing to Lingard to leave the club on loan earlier on Monday
United were also reluctant to allow Lingard to go back to West Ham – where he had a successful loan spell last season – or Tottenham and Leicester because they are seen as top-four rivals.

Lingard is said to be hugely disappointed at the news, especially after Rangnick gave his departure the green light following talks at Carrington on Monday morning.
The 29-year-old was desperate to play football again and reclaim a place in the England squad ahead of the World Cup, having made just two starts for United this season.
Among the clubs interested were West Ham, where Lingard spent the second half of last term
Lingard must now see out the rest of his contract at Old Trafford before leaving as a free agent in the summer after 21 years’ service.
United sources insist that the decision to keep him is not connected to the possibility of Mason Greenwood being out of action for some time while he remains under investigation over allegations of rape and sexual assault.
Rangnick has been willing to let United’s unhappy players leave in the January window with Anthony Martial joining Sevilla on loan and Van de Beek on the verge of a move to Everton.
Lingard was also interested in joining Eddie Howe’s Newcastle despite their league position
Newcastle’s attention returned to Lingard on Monday when a £33m deal for Reims striker Hugo Etitike collapsed with the 19-year-old unsure of making such a big move abroad at this stage of his career.
Newcastle co-owner Amanda Staveley and head coach Eddie Howe were pushing hard to bring in Lingard, who wanted to join the club. They were in talks last week but walked away when quoted a £2.5m loan fee plus a £12m survival bonus.
Sources say United were willing to lower the survival payment to £9m over the weekend but hopes of a deal were dashed just after 6pm on Monday.
Lingard has struggled for game time since he returned from his loan at West Ham
